inthechaseto – I am sure Forrest is flattered:

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
    – Charles Caleb Colton

And this is my final answer, Alex:

A little book, called, “Journal of a Trapper”:

    www.amazon.com/Journal-Trapper-Osborne-Russell/dp/0803251661

Because of what you said about maps,…and an X.

E* – I too hope Forrest is flattered, that would be marvelous.

I didn’t know there are maps in Journal of a Trapper – hum -I’ll have to check that out again – I have read it and don’t remember seeing the word “marvel”. That journey is in the wrong state for my solve – but good for yours.

        • spallies – New year,…new Frieze,…although I have always really enjoyed Michelangelo,…so the old one made me smile each time I saw it. I am waiting for Smaug the Dragon to come up from that well…

vgboss – Did you have anything to do with that?

      • E* –

Thanks for the info on the maps.

In the book I have – the word “scant” is on page 80 and used again on page 112. The word tarry is used once. As there are a total of 233 words in the book this places most of the words “in the middle”.

  2. Hi All !

Yes Bob, VG and I are back –

I thought I would start out the year with a gift for all of you – a huge hint that may break this hunt wide open.

For all serious searchers – have you found THE book?

We all know how very much Forrest loves books and have seen his extensive collection.

When my hubby and I decided to become full time RV’ers – some of my book collection had to go – and it hurt. One the few books I kept was this one small book that I purchased in 1998.

It has within it’s pages, most of single words used in the poem; that is to include the
not often used words of tarry and scant.

I am not going to give out the name of it – but it is right in your face -as so many things are – the reason being – some here may not want me to – so I am just letting you know – it’s out there and is a hint which might get you headed in the right direction – and give you more fun in this awesome treasure hunt – because when you are on the right path everything falls into place easily. Then you can turn up the radio and dance around the room when you find a new clue like I have done so many times.

PS – Just to clarify -I am not saying this is the only book outside of TTOTC or TFTW that may help you in the chase – there are others.

Just yesterday, I found a mistake in my calculations and now have to go back and see where that will take me. Drats. So I am not finished. That mistake was made because I relied on Wiki – I like Wiki – but double check facts on anything related to the chase – as they are intentionally being changed.

As an aside -I think some are correct when they are saying this chase is all about people. I will go one step further and say it is also about friendships, love, integrity and where we are going in the future. Oh, and lets not forget -Forrests wonderful sense of humor – yes, it’s there- in the grand finale.

Dream Big and Happy Hunting in the New Year.

  3. Hey VGboss is back!
Let me get you caught up VG!
I found the chest of gold VG!
Yeah, that’s right! It was in Colorado just like you said! Telluride to be exact. I got the first two clues right, and seven more! You’re too late VG…where did you go? I suspected you and inthechaseto were lurking and following what I posted and were gonna try and beat me to the Telluride historical museum! But guess what VG? You failed! Probably missed your flight while you was waitin for inthechaseto to fix her makeup! Ha ha!
Too bad buddy. Not only did I take the chest and go in peace, I’m living it up now in florida, and smokin Cubans! Yeah, I talked Obama into makin a deal with Castros brother. It’s gone on long enough. I bought a little spread in Cuba, why don’t you come see me sometime? We can kick back on my beachfront property, talk about the good ol days…on Dals blog, and how all my ideas were right and you were wrong. Well, except Colorado. I’ll give you that one VG because I was always sayin Wyoming. But hey I got to give you some respect for staying active and creative. You did stimulate a lot of my thought processes. And best part was, you pissed off Dal. Lol and Here’s a little secret…heavy loads and water high is a sluice box, in the creek. No paddle, just work the box.
You know me better than anybody VG, so just for you my proof. A photo of the chest. And yes, I sent FF back a bracelet. Not sure if it was the right one, but it was blue.
    Glad you’re back VG.

      • Wolf- that’s an actual display at the Telluride Historical Museum outside where they have mining equipment. Ore cars on tracks, ore crushing equipment and other items relating to the mines there. The sluice box display was an interactive piece for kids to find real gold and gems. Little ones could stand on that box to see down into the sluice box.

      • VGboss- I notice Charlie Brown and Linus are missing from the Peanuts gang ice skating…

Linus- “have you made any New Years resolutions Charlie Brown?”
Charlie Brown- “yes I have Linus…you know how I always dread the whole year? Well, this time I’m only going to dread one day at a time.”

        Linus-“good grief.”

Bob- “I resolved many years ago to never again make a New Years resolution.”

        Charlie Brown- “good grief.”

          (Quote)

        • Bob and vgboss – I think Charlie Brown and Linus are BOTH in this photo,…and so is Pig Pen,…who might be a lot cleaner,…if he fell through the ice (God Forbid!). I think Forrest might have identified with Pig Pen,…especially before he made it out to the hot springs,…on the Firehole River,…in YNP,…to bathe. 🙂

  4. Bob:
    Mike- good morning Richard.

Richard- MIKE!! The Mike man…Mike a roni! Makin a copy.

Mike- we missed you bowling last night, Richard.

Richard- Mike the strike man, rolling his balls…the Mikester!!!

    Mike- see ya later Rich.

Richard- mr. Mike…my man Mike! Leaving the Richmeister! Mike-a-rama!!!
    MIKE!

We should have our own contest, we could make our own Mike to share on the blog.We could put him in all kinds of situations. 🙂

  5. SB121- well this is funny, I sent Mike a short video of me and my dog just 3 days ago. I guess he hasn’t found it yet in his email. Mike! I tried to put it on the blog myself but it didn’t work. I think my dog is better than Tesuque. I know for a fact he can jump farther. But we had a falling out. And I haven’t seen him since. I helped him out of a jam, and he attacked me! That’s gratitude for ya. Good riddance I say. Watch the video, I’m sure you’ll agree. No more dogs for me.
    MIKE!!!

      (Quote)

    • Guess I better set the scene for everybody as the video might be difficult to watch for dog lovers. I took him camping. We just got there. I was unrolling the awning on the RV and the dog was jumping all over the place, excited. He jumped on a brace for the awning and got stuck! I said get out of there before you get hurt! But he wouldn’t get out so I got a stick. He sees me with the stick and starts peein all over the place and crying. I can’t stand a cryin dog. So I got after him with the stick, and he come loose. That’s when he attacked me.
      Just watch you’ll see.
Mike ! Where’s Mike ? Does he bowl tonight ?

        (Quote)

      • Probably, Bob. I can see him in a nice bowling shirt with “The Mikester” embroidered on the back. I was never really good at bowling. After two strikes I hate having to gutterball all the rest of the frames on purpose. I’m proud to say, however, that I’ve been OUT just for getting three strikes. Strategy, Bob. Strategy.

          (Quote)

        • Thanks JC. And way to go for winning the ornament contest. I can’t post on blog buzz or news or lounge so I pick threads with few comments. Nice ornament. (And strategy)

            (Quote)

        • Oops, Bob. I’m just now reading what I wrote and it doesn’t make sense. What I meant was “I’ve NEVER been out just for getting three strikes” while bowling…which would explain all the gutterballs. 🙂 Perhaps now my strategy makes more sense.

  6. So Forrest seems to lean towards Norse mythology, thanking Thor and naming his alligator Beowulf; has anyone delved deeper into the story of the Norse dwarf Alviss (all-wise)?

      (Quote)

    • Marie – I have done some research into dwarves,…and Norse mythology,…especially when I read the story of Sigurd and Otr. Here is a good link about Alviss and dwarves:

      www.viking-mythology.com/dwarfs.php

And a little about Odin, Thor’s father, and his magical artifacts and symbols (See: The Ravens,…which made me think of Noah and the Ark):

A number of magical artifacts are associated with Odin: the spear Gungnir, which never misses its target; a magical gold ring (Draupnir), from which every ninth night eight new rings appear; and two ravens Huginn and Muninn (“Thought” and “Memory”), who fly around Earth daily and report the happenings of the world to Odin in Valhalla at night. He also owned Sleipnir, an eight-legged horse, who was given to Odin by Loki, and the severed head of Mímir, which foretold the future. He also commands a pair of wolves named Geri and Freki, to whom he gives his food in Valhalla since he consumes nothing but mead or wine. The Valknut (slain warrior’s knot) is a symbol associated with Odin, consisting of three interlaced triangles.
